What Is Common Core? The Common Core State Standards aim to raise student achievement by standardizing what's taught in schools across the United States, but have sparked controversy among educators, parents and politicians. The role that parents, guardians, and families play in student success in mathematics is as powerful as that of teachers! Parents personal experiences, attitudes, understandings (and misunderstandings!) are often transferred to students. As your child’s chief role model, you can do so much to assist and support your child’s learning of mathematics in school. CMC wants to help! | Feb 5, 2015, 6:46 PM | Sharon Huggins

You will find the initial episodes in a library of videos we are shooting and editing just for parents. In these first clips, our teacher-writers describe how to help your child have a positive math experience, who wrote Great Minds’s math curriculum, and how to work with your child’s teacher and school. We are a Washington, D.C. based non-profit 501(c)3 organization that seeks to ensure that all students, regardless of their circumstance, receive a content-rich education in the full range of the liberal arts and sciences, including English, mathematics, history, the arts, science, and foreign languages. Since 2007 we have worked with teachers and scholars to create instructional materials, conduct research, and promote policies that support a comprehensive and high-quality education in America’s public schools. | Feb 5, 2015, 6:38 PM | Sharon Huggins

The National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academy of Sciences managed the first of two steps in the creation of the Next Generation Science Standards by developing the A Framework for K-12 Science Education, which was released July 2011. The Framework provides a sound, evidence-based foundation for standards by drawing on current scientific research—including research on the ways students learn science effectively—and identifies the science all K–12 students should know. Through a collaborative, state-led process managed by Achieve, new K–12 science standards have been developed that are rich in content and practice, arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education. The NGSS is based on the Framework for K–12 Science Education developed by the National Research Council. | Feb 22, 2015, 12:53 PM | Sharon Huggins

Members of the STEM Coalition believe that our nation must improve the way our students learn science, mathematics, technology and engineering and that the business, education, and STEM communities must work together to achieve this goal. | Feb 22, 2015, 12:59 PM | Sharon Huggins
